UFC 300, the highly anticipated pay-per-view event for the UFC, still lacks a main event, leaving fight fans eagerly awaiting the announcement of the headliner. Currently, there is no clue as to who will headline the event, which promises blockbuster fights from start to finish.
One of the names rumored to headline the event was Jon Jones, one of the best MMA fighters ever. Fans would have liked him to headline the event; however, the fighter in question has rejected the idea. The reveal of this rejection has led to tension with a former opponent of his.
Jon Jones snubbed UFC 300 main event
In an interview with Submission Radio, Jon Jones, who was in Australia recently, revealed that he was offered the main event spot on UFC 300. “I got a call from Hunter Campbell, one of the head lawyers of the UFC, asking me, ‘So John, I know it’s only nine weeks away, but if there’s any chance you’re feeling up to it, man, it’d be awesome news,'” said Jones in the interview.
“As honored as I am for the opportunity, I just don’t think I’ll be ready. I just don’t,”Jones revealed that he rejected the offer as he thought he would not be ready in time as he was recovering from injury. Jones had injured his pectoral muscles and his elbow and has had surgery recently.
“I’m getting up there in age; I only have a few more events left, and I want to give those events my all and make sure that I come back 100%,”Jones stated that he only has a short window of opportunity left, as he has crossed his mid-30s, which is considered old for MMA fighters.
Dana White had earlier revealed that Conor McGregor will not fight at UFC 300 and with Jones also out of the equation, all signs point to either a middleweight title fight between Dricus du Plessis and Israel Adesanya or a light heavyweight title fight between Adesanya and Alex Pereira.
Chael Sonnen rips at Jon Jones
Chael Sonnen, the three-time UFC title challenger and former opponent of Jon Jones, ripped Jon Jones for revealing that he rejected the headlining spot of UFC 300. “I would just have absolutely no idea what goes through that guy’s head. Like, there’s a level of stupid that’s really hard to achieve, right? I mean, it’s hard,” said Sonnen on his YouTube channel.
“In fairness, I wouldn’t know. Like, when would it be okay for Jon to claim that he was offered a main event at UFC 300? When would that be okay to claim when he wasn’t? If he’s working, if that’s a hustle to get a headline, he did a great job,” Sonnen bashed Jones for the statements due to being an inactive fighter who has only fought once in the last four years.
“You have a heavyweight champion of the world who is amongst the best who have ever done it in any weight class, right? Heavyweights suck, so it’s not like a compliment,” Sonnen further added.
‘The American Gangster’ went on a rant directed at Jones, even stating that the title of heavyweight champion does not hold much weight due to their perceived lack of skill when compared with fighters in other weight classes.
