“Don’t think my Karate and Jiu-Jitsu would have been useful”: Georges St-Pierre recalls frightening silverback gorilla encounter

Georges St-Pierre achieved something in Mixed Martial Arts only a select few have been able to accomplish. The Canadian fighter became a two-division UFC champion and defeated every fighter he has ever faced in his career. Many consider him to be one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time.

St-Pierre is certainly a national icon in his home country, Canada. A well-rounded fighter, St-Pierre has extensive mastery of all the aspects of MMA. However, that did not help him when he faced a grave danger in a jungle in Africa.

Georges St-Pierre details his silverback gorilla encounter

Georges St-Pierre has extensive knowledge of fighting and also has an adventurous persona. As such, he once ventured into the jungles of the African nation of Rwanda for Gorilla trekking where he came face to face with a silverback Gorilla as per Sportskeeda.

St-Pierre detailed his experience on his recent appearance on the Pound for Pound podcast, hosted by Kamaru Usman and Henry Cejudo.

“If a gorilla looks at you or a silverback, you don’t look at him, you don’t eat in front of him, you don’t take flash photos, and if he comes towards you, don’t run away, just get out of the way and make yourself in a submissive pose,” said St-Pierre of the instruction he got from his guide.

As expected, a silverback came face to face with St-Pierre and he did exactly what the guide instructed. Therefore, the silverback did not find the ex-UFC champion to be a threat and left it alone. “I don’t think my Karate and Jiu-Jitsu would have been useful if the situation with the Silverback Gorilla had escalated. Thanks God! šŸ˜‚šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ™”, St Pierre tweeted about the incident on X.

Gorillas, the largest living primates, live in groups and a silverback is the group’s leader. St. Pierre explained on the podcast that the Gorilla put himself in a vulnerable position before St-Pierre to prove that the animal was superior to the Canadian fighter. The former double champion considers the moment one of his life’s most fearful ones.

Georges St-Pierre believes his superiority over Khabib Nurmagomedov

Georges St-Pierre spoke of various things during his appearance on the Pound for Pound podcast. One of the interesting things he spoke of was about a hypothetical matchup between him and Khabib Nurmagomedov, the UFC lightweight champion who retired undefeated.

“I’m not saying I would have beaten Khabib all the time,” said St-Pierre. “I think I would have beaten him because in a way that I was going, if he would have come to put pressure on me, I would have put him down,” St-Pierre explained how a hypothetical matchup would’ve transpired if happened.

St-Pierre and Nurmagomedov were rumored to fight at one point in time. Abdulmanap, the father of Nurmagomedov, wanted his son to retire after defeating GSP. However, the untimely death of Abdulmanap forced Nurmagomedov to retire after his fight against Justin Gaethje at UFC 254.

UFC CEO Dana White wanted to make the fight and even offered it to GSP. However, Nurmagomeodv was rock solid in his decision to stay retired. Nonetheless, Nurmagomedov is very respectful towards GPS who also happened to be his father’s favorite fighter. There were also rumors of grappling match between the two, but it also did not materialize.
