One record Lamine Yamal broke to surpass Lionel Messi’s successor at Barcelona

Barcelona are having one of their worst seasons in recent years, which is quite surprising after winning La Liga last season. The Catalans are due for a huge overhaul next season, but they can still be happy about one thing: young superstar Lamine Yamal.

The teenage sensation has broken through the ranks of La Masia to become the saviour of Barcelona this season. At just 16 years of age, he has proved that he is one to watch in the future, and the club may just be looking at another great player in him.

Lamine Yamal breaks Ansu Fati’s record

Barcelona were certainly disappointed to get a draw against Granada at home with a 3-3 score line. However, it was Lamine Yamal who was the player responsible for Barcelona even getting a draw. The 16 year old scored a brace to help the team salvage a point and was awarded Man of the Match.

His brace means that another record has been broken by the teenager. He is now the youngest player in La Liga history to score a brace, being aged 16 years and 213 days. The previous record holder was none other than Barcelona’s own Ansu Fati, who was 17 at the time.

Fati was designated as club legend Lionel Messi’s successor at the club and even took his iconic No. 10 shirt number. However, he failed to impress, with injuries also plaguing him, and he is now loaned to Brighton.

In his absence, Yamal can now be called the successor to Messi’s legacy at the club. Though he has a long way to go to prove that, he has already shown he has what it takes. His style of play is similar to the Argentine, with his dribbles and skills mesmerizing the audience. He already has 10 G\A this season, the youngest to achieve this. Yamal also holds the records for youngest starter and goal scorer in club history, and many other records as well.

Lamine Yamal holds the record of youngest goal scorer for Spain

Lamine Yamal isn’t just impressing for Barcelona, but he has also taken his skills to the international level as well. Having dual citizenship for Morocco and Spain, the teenager chose to represent the Spanish national team, after previously playing for their youth teams.

He was called up to the team in September for the Euro 2024 qualifying games. He made his debut as a substitute on 8th September, 2023 against Georgia, and also scored in the same game. At the age of 16 years and 57 days, he became both the youngest player and goal scorer in Spanish national team history. Again he broke the record of a fellow Barcelona teammate Gavi who was the previous record holder.

If the young talent continues to perform this way, it is safe to say he could be the true successor to Lionel Messi. Barcelona will next face Celta Vigo on Saturday night, and they will count on Lamine Yamal to help them once again.
