Barcelona Injury Report: Frenkie de Jong carted off the field after ankle problem

For the past few seasons, Frenkie de Jong has been enjoying some stability at Barcelona. The Dutchman joined Barcelona in 2019 but debate over his perfect role at the club took a few years, which definitely stalled his progress as a Barcelona player, a feat he’s just beginning to enjoy some five years into his career at the Catalan club.

Frenkie de Jong is now one of the most important players at the club, and despite their inconsistencies this season, he remains one of the top players. Sadly, he may be forced to spend the next few weeks on the sidelines as he suffered an injury to his ankle that may keep him out of action for a while.

Frenkie de Jong injury update

Barcelona went into yesterday’s game knowing that a win over Athletic Bilbao would put them second, one point above Girona and six behind league leaders Real Madrid, who had also endured a difficult outing against Valencia the previous day in a controversial 2-2 game that saw the returning Jude Bellingham given a red card after the game.

Sadly, Barcelona got more than they bargained for, as they suffered more than just their failure to capitalize on their rivals’ disappointing results. Frenkie de Jong, who had started the game brightly, went down in the 26th minute of the game with an ankle injury, which was worse than it initially appeared, as he had to be taken off the pitch with a carting wheel.

Although no official report has been released on the injury, the Dutchman is set to spend at least two months on the sidelines. Frenkie de Jong was later spotted at the airport with clutches and a big cast on his leg. He also appeared to be in pain as he made his way to the team’s plane on what happened to be an unfortunate night for Xavi and Barcelona.

Barcelona injury report

Frenkie de Jong, whose price tag has been revealed ahead of an important summer transfer window, was not the only player Barcelona lost to injury yesterday. The club’s superstar midfield maestro, Pedri, who was only returning to full fitness after his recent injury woes, also went off in tears, as he damaged his hamstring while trying to make a clearance in yesterday’s goalless draw against Athletic de Bilbao in the La Liga.

Currently, the Catalan club has six players on the treatment table, including Frenkie de Jong and Pedri, who suffered fresh injuries yesterday. Gavi is the one with the longest time on the sidelines, as he suffered a season-ending ACL injury while on international duty with Spain last year. The Spaniard is set to return to full fitness in June, which means he will not take part in any official capacity for Barcelona again this season.

Barcelona also have injuries to Marcos Alonso, Ferran Torres, and Alejandro Balde. Torres and Marcos alonso are expected to be back in action later this month while Balde’s back injury is not expected to fully heal until June, when the season would have also been over; same as Gavi.
