NFL News: Commanders officially sign Cowboys DC Dan Quinn as new HC

Dan Quinn’s coaching journey started in 2001 as a defensive quality control coach with the San Francisco 49ers. Since then, he has been on a course that has seen him serve stints with prominent teams such as the Seattle Seahawks, Atlanta Falcons, and most recently, the Dallas Cowboys.

Impressed by Quinn’s track record and defensive expertise, the Washington Commanders ultimately made the decision to entrust him with the head coaching position.

Commanders sign Dan Quinn

The Washington Commanders have officially appointed Dan Quinn as their new head coach. It marked the culmination of a week-long process that began with a verbal agreement.

On Saturday, the 53-year-old expressed his excitement about leading this iconic franchise into a new era.

“I am thrilled for the opportunity to become the next head coach of such a storied franchise and fanbase,” Quinn enthusiastically stated. “Under the leadership of Josh Harris, the ownership group, and Adam Peters, we cannot wait to help usher in a new era of Washington Commanders football. The organization has an outstanding vision, and I’m honored to be a part of what’s next.”

This move came after the team parted ways with cancer winning head coach Ron Rivera following the conclusion of the regular season. Meanwhile, Quinn’s arrival follows a successful three-season stint as the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys.

His expertise in shaping formidable defenses has been evident throughout his career, notably during his time with the Seattle Seahawks, where he played a crucial role in their defensive prowess.

In fact, his NFL coaching tenure included a successful stint with the Falcons, guiding the team to a Super Bowl victory. However, after the 2020 season, the Falcons made the decision to part ways with him. His impressive track record and Super Bowl-winning experience made him a compelling choice for the Washington Commanders.

The decision to hire the former Cowboys’ DC came after the Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson communicated his decision to stay with the Lions, keeping the request of the famous singer Eminem. This turn of events ultimately paved the way for Quinn to step into the leadership role with the Commanders.

Josh Harris lavishes praise on Dan Quinn

The Commanders’ decision to appoint Dan Quinn as their head coach has been met with lavish praise from controlling owner Josh Harris, who wanted to change the culture of team. Quinn’s impressive achievements as the defensive coordinator for the Cowboys were instrumental in securing his new leadership position.

“Dan has rightfully earned a reputation as one of the NFL’s top defensive minds, building tough, explosive and dynamic teams that compete hard,” expressed Harris in a statement, per NBC Sports.

Under Quinn’s guidance, the Commanders boasted the fifth-ranked total defense, limiting opponents to a mere 299.7 yards per game in the recent season. The Commanders, recognizing the value of Quinn’s experience and defensive acumen, made the strategic decision to entrust him with the role of head coach. Even Josh Harris shared his belief that Quinn’s leadership qualities were equally significant in the decision-making process.

“But most importantly, he is an incredible leader who brings out the best in his players, coaches, and staff.”

As Quinn takes the helm, the Commanders are poised for a fresh start after a challenging season with a 4-13 record. Their second pick in the upcoming draft adds to the team’s potential for transformation.

With Quinn’s expertise, the focus will now shift towards building on the rest of the coaching staff and preparing for the next chapter in the Commanders’ journey.
