NFL Rumors: Washington likely to hire Bill Belichick’s son as their defensive coordinator

The 2024 NFL season will be special because it will be the first without Bill Belichick leading an NFL club after 24 seasons. Even six Super Bowl victories could not save his job, as the New England Patriots ultimately replaced him with Jerod Mayo after mutually parting ways with Belichick.

While the former New England Patriots age-defying head coach, who has been vying to surpass Don Shula, is facing hot water, one of his sons is reportedly securing his job in college football.

Bill Belichick’s son potentially landing college football job

The longstanding presence of the Belichick family within the New England Patriots coaching staff is undergoing a significant shift. As the iconic head coach bids farewell, his son, Steve Belichick, who served as the Patriots’ offensive linebacker coach, is also on the verge of departing to explore a new role in college football.

The rumor mill has it that Steve is currently in the process of interviewing for defensive positions on Jedd Fisch’s staff at the University of Washington. Additionally, Vinnie Sunseri, the Patriots’ RB coach, has joined Steve as a candidate for the coaching staff at the University of Washington.

In a parallel move, Bill Belichick’s other son, Brian Belichick, previously the safety coach, faces an uncertain future. Mayo has reportedly offered both Steve and Brian roles on his staff, albeit in a demoted “senior advisor” capacity, as per SI.com reports.

How many kids does Bill Belichick have?

Bill Belichick boasts a family deeply ingrained in the world of coaching. With three children—Amanda, Steve, and Brian—whom he shares with his ex-wife, Debby Clarke Belichick, the Belichick coaching dynasty spans multiple generations.

Amanda, the eldest of Belichick’s offspring and his only daughter, followed in her father’s footsteps by pursuing a coaching career. In 2015, she made waves as the head coach of the College of the Holy Cross lacrosse team.

Meanwhile, Steve joined his father in the Patriots organization as a coaching assistant in 2012. Over the years, he steadily ascended the coaching ranks, eventually being named the team’s safety coach before transitioning to outside linebacker coach in 2020.

Together, Bill and Steve celebrated three Super Bowl championships, cementing their success as a coaching duo.

Then Brian joined his father and brother in the Patriots organization as a scouting assistant in 2016 to complete a coaching trio.

Now, as Steve contemplates the prospect of coaching at the collegiate level for the first time, Brian’s decision regarding his Patriots tenure remains in limbo. If Steve’s potential deal materializes and Brian also decides to move on, it marks the end of a family coaching legacy that spanned several years with the Patriots.

The team would then embark on a new era, bidding farewell to the Belichick family’s enduring presence on the coaching sidelines.
