Reported Sir Jim Ratcliffe decision puts Gareth Southgate at Manchester United hot seat

The England national team is readying itself for another international break, and they will have two very important friendly games against Brazil and Belgium. Manager Gareth Southgate will be hoping his boys get the job done against the two very good teams to show the progress of the team.

With the club season also coming to an end, many teams are considering their options for a new manager. Manchester United are one of those teams that are contemplating a very shocking move, one that involves Southgate.

Gareth Southgate reportedly replacing Erik Ten Hag

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has taken over the sporting direction of Manchester United, and is ready to bring big changes to the club. One of the most shocking rumors is that he plans to replace current manager Erik Ten Hag with England national team boss Gareth Southgate.

Erik Ten Hag is in his second season at Old Trafford but has not managed to continue on the success of his first season. The team is only 6th in the Premier League and has been knocked out of all other competitions other than the FA Cup. The Dutchman’s job is in danger, and unless he wins the FA Cup and ensures Champions League qualification for next season, he could be sacked.

The INEOS backed club is already looking into prospective replacements. One of the surprising names is that of Gareth Southgate, who is leading England in the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament in Germany. His contract only ends in December, and he already has another offer to extend it until the 2026 World Cup.

Two other managerial candidates are that of Brentford manager Thomas Frank and Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, with the Italian being wanted by clubs like Barcelona, Liverpool, and many more.

Gareth Southgate’s managerial pedigree

Manchester United are one of the biggest clubs in the world, and it is surprising to hear Gareth Southgate be nominated for their managerial role. While he has been impressive in his current role since 2016, Southgate has failed to deliver a single international trophy despite a very gifted and brilliant squad at his disposal.

Furthermore, he has only managed one club in his career and that is Middlesbrough. He was there for three year and had managed to get them relegated in his final season, which eventually led to his dismissal.

Southgate then managed the England U-21 team from 2013 with mixed results, before becoming caretaker manager of the senior team in 2016. He was made the permanent manager the next year, a role he is still fulfilling.

Gareth Southgate will now be managing England in their two upcoming friendly games against Brazil and Belgium on March 24 and 27 respectively.
