Thomas Muller on the verge of breaking Sepp Maier’s record for the most Bayern Munich appearances

Only a few players have been so impactful in the history of the sport without getting much recognition for it. Thomas Muller is perhaps one of those in the last decade to achieve so much success and yet get no appreciation for it.

However, Bayern Munich fans know exactly how great of a player Muller is. After all, he is one of their best players ever and has stuck by them his entire career. And now another important milestone awaits for him to be crowned as one of their truly best players.

Thomas Muller inches close to surpassing Sepp Maier’s record

Thomas Muller has now played a total of 700 official games for Bayern Munich since he participated in the 3-2 loss against Heidenheim back in 2008. He is the first outfield player to achieve this remarkable feat for the club. He is now only 9 appearances behind Sepp Maier. The German goalkeeping legend is the club’s top appearance maker, with 709 matches played.

Muller has only ever played for Bayern Munich in his long career since his debut in 2008. Since then, he has become one of the key players in the German club, winning a lot of trophies, including 12 Bundesliga titles and two Champions League triumphs, which also include a historic sextuple season in 2020. In the 700 games he has played for them, he has an amazing record of 239 goals and assisted 265 goals.

Already the owner of the most victories record in the club’s history, Muller now can become their highest ever appearance maker. With only 10 more appearances needed to break Maier’s record, he may need to wait for next season. Bayern only have 8 more games this season, which can increase to 11 if they go all the way to the Champions League final. Muller has already seen limited playing time so he may not participate in all the games. Having signed a contract until next year after much uncertainty regarding it, there is enough time for him to break the record.

Thomas Muller forecasts Arsenal vs Bayern Munich matchup

Bayern Munich will now go trophy less for the first time since 2011-12, as they are already out of all competitions aside from the Champions League. It has also become quite impossible for them to win the Bundesliga, with Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen 16 points ahead of them. The UCL is their only hope, and their quarter final fixtures are against Arsenal.

Historically, the Bavarians have dominated the English side, having won 10-1 over two legs the last time they met in the 2016-17 season. But they are not the same team as previous seasons. While Bayern have fallen hugely in standards, Arsenal have established themselves as quite an exciting and strong team.

And this is the same sentiment Thomas Muller has, having said that Arsenal will be quite a team to beat, though he is convinced they will still come out as winners. “This is no longer the Arsenal that Bayern have always comfortably dispatched in the past. It will be a big task, but Iā€™m convinced that we will beat the Gunners.”

Bayern Munich and Arsenal will now prepare for the first leg of their UCL quarter final clash on Wednesday, and Thomas Muller will hope to represent his side once more.
