The San Francisco 49ers’ main area of worry at the moment is the quarterback room, and they are in search of a solution practically every day. Amid these situations, the 49ers startled the crowd by moving quarterback Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys, despite having sold three first-round picks to Miami to advance and choosing Trey Lance third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft as a backup option.
The stunning choice was definitely the result of numerous day and night discussions when the 49ers announced the major decision and John Lynch, general manager of the team gave an immediate explanation for the deal.
49ers GM on Trey Lance’s trade to Cowboys
Lance participated in the 49ers camp up until last week. In an interview on Thursday, Lynch said that the team has been looking at all of its possibilities for him, including a trade. Later, he added that there was a good chance Lance would continue to play for the team as its third quarterback when the season began.
The choice, which Lynch claimed was difficult for that reason, was nevertheless made quickly. The general manager of San Francisco revealed that his team made the choice since their original plan for the quarterback did not pan out during Friday’s preseason game broadcast. John said they were responsible for their inability to execute the strategy and that they owned it.
“Really hard day, such a wonderful young man. We took a shot and it didn’t work out. We own that. We take accountability for it. But I think, as I think you guys do, his story is still very much unwritten.”
Since beginning his adventure with the 49ers, the quarterback has desperately needed playing time. After expressing regret that his time with the organization had not been successful, the 49ers general manager later expressed his best wishes for the quarterback’s future in Dallas.
“I’m excited for Trey. Dallas stepped up and really wanted him and they came after him. And I think it’s going to be a great landing spot for him.”
Trey Lance’s NFL preseason performances
The 49ers’ quarterback room had been the main focus of conversation leading up to the preseason game, as the organization attempted to reach a decision on both Sam Darnold and Trey. The 23-year-old started San Francisco’s first preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders and produced a relatively good stat line, going 10-of-15 for 112 yards, one touchdown, and a passer rating of 111. Sam, the 49ers’ backup quarterback, also performed admirably and carried himself like the best option for the 49ers with 55 starts against a preseason defense.

In their second preseason game against the Denver Broncos, the former 49ers completed 12-of-18 passes for 173 yards, while Darnold closed the night by completing 11 of his 14 passes for 108 yards and one touchdown. Both players had an equal number of touchdowns and interceptions.
However, in Dallas, TL now has a new beginning with a solid culture, a seasoned locker group, and their veteran quarterback Dak Prescott from whom he can learn strategies to better his position.
