Real Madrid go top of La Liga with late winner vs Alaves, Bellingham finishes year as top scorer

Real Madrid is enjoying a triumphant season with only one defeat across all competitions this term. They have qualified for the Champions League Last-16 with a 100% win record and have demonstrated their strong contention for the league title. Meanwhile, they have ascended to the peak of the La Liga table, ending the year on top.

Carlo Ancelotti led his side to clinch a narrow 1-0 away win over newly-promoted Alaves on Thursday in their final match of 2023. Additionally, Real Madrid’s ace Jude Bellingham finished his record-breaking year by claiming the league’s top-scorer tag.

Real Madrid secures late win over Alaves

Real Madrid boasting the highest number of La Liga titles in history, is on track for their potential 36th title this season. Los Blancos finished as runners-up in the previous season, trailing 10 points behind arch-rivals Barcelona.

Nonetheless, this season, Real Madrid has secured their lead over the Catalans, with only Girona offering stiff competition for the league championship. Both teams are tied on points, wins, draws, and even defeats, with Girona currently sitting in second place.

The 14-time UCL winners secured a single-goal victory against Deportiva Alaves at Mendizorrotza Stadium. The fixture seemed destined for a goalless draw, especially with Los Blancos down to 10 men after Nacho was sent off in the latter half.

However, Lucas Vazquez’s last-gasp header in added time secured all three points for his side ahead of the Christmas holiday break.

As a result, Carlo Ancelotti’s side climbs to the top of the points table with 45 points, securing 14 wins at the end of the calendar year. Interestingly, during the game, English midfielder Jude Bellingham received two yellow cards, one in each half. However, he managed to avoid a red card, leaving viewers puzzled.

Jude Bellingham finishes year as La Liga topscorer

The arrival of the Englishmen, Jude Bellingham at the Santiago Bernabeu has proven as one of the epic transfers for Real Madrid in their history. In his impressive debut season, his brace in ā€˜El Clasicoā€™ announced his domination in the Spanish league.

Fascinatingly, the Golden Boy Award winner has surpassed prolific goal-scorers like last season’s top scorers Robert Lewandowski, Antoine Griezmann, Morata, and Gerard Moreno. Bellingham has scored 13 goals in 16 La Liga appearances, placing him at the top of the La Liga goalscorers list this season.

Overall, the 20-year-old midfielder has notched up an impressive tally of 17 goals in his debut season with Real Madrid, making 21 appearances in all competitions.Ā Jude currently stands as the club’s top scorer, surpassing the likes of Rodrygo, Joselu, and Vinicius Jr this season. Notably, all of his goals have come through open play without a single penalty.
