Bill Belichick’s son Steve provides update legendary NFL HC’s future after Patriots exit: “The guy just loves football”

Since 1974, Bill Belichick has been a prominent figure in NFL coaching, but 2024 marks a departure from this long standing tradition. He had just mutually parted ways with the New England Patriots in January, and had an interview with the Atlanta Falcons for his next head coaching position.

Despite multiple coaching opportunities emerging across the NFL, Belichick’s focus was centered on the Falcons. However, Raheem Morris later secured the role of Falcons HC, and Belichick’s 2024 season destiny seemed sealed. Now, an update from his son, Steve, sheds light on the iconic coach’s post-Patriots future.

Steve Belichick shares update on Bill Belichick’s future

Steve Belichick provided insights into his father Bill Belichick’s future during a recent interview on Chris Long’s Green Light podcast. Despite the absence of a head coaching position, Steve hinted at the possibility of Belichick entering the media landscape while jokingly suggesting regular podcast appearances or even pursuing a career in television.

“I think he’s good. Let the stuff roll off your back and move forward. He doesn’t dwell, unless we lost a game and he needs to get on some guys. Eventually you need to turn the page. Honestly I wasn’t too involved in any of that stuff, he did his thing, I did my thing and that was kind of that. He’s definitely pursuing some other stuff, whether it’s TV or hopefully a regular on the Green Light or whatever it may be”, he said via Pats Pulpit.

Steve acknowledged his father’s passion for football. He also mentioned Bill’s recent appearance on ESPN’s “College GameDay” as a glimpse into the typically tight-lipped coach’s potential on TV.

“His hobbies would still be to, let’s say, critique football. So you know he was excited when I came out here because he got to evaluate the scheme last year, evaluate the players last year. I’m sure he’ll come out here at some point to do some stuff. The guy just loves football, so there’s definitely that element.”

The details of Bill Belichick’s post-coaching endeavors remain vague, but it is clear that he will stay connected to football in some capacity in 2024. Steve also expressed his full support for Jerod Mayo, the new head coach for the Patriots.

Looking back at Bill Belichick’s NFL coaching career

Bill Belichick’s illustrious NFL coaching career spans 24 seasons. His legacy is defined by unprecedented success, making him one of the longest-tenured coaches with a single team in NFL history.

The journey began in the 2001 season with a remarkable upset against the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI. It marked the Patriots’ first-ever championship. This victory set the stage for a dynasty, as they secured two more Super Bowl titles in 2003 and 2004 and solidified their status as the team of the 2000s.

The following years witnessed a dynasty in full bloom, as the Patriots clinched three more Super Bowl titles in 2003, 2004, and 2014.

However, amid the glory, controversies loomed, notably the infamous “Spygate” scandal in 2007. The controversy marred the team’s pursuit of perfection despite an undefeated regular season, and Belichick was fined $500,000 for the incident.

However, the HC’s resilience and adaptability shone through, as evidenced by the Patriots’ historic comeback from a 28-3 deficit against the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI. The Patriots’ dominance extended into the 2010s, culminating in yet another Super Bowl victory in 2018.

Nevertheless, the dynasty eventually succumbed to the passage of time following Tom Brady’s departure.

Bill Belichick ended his journey with the Pats with a 266-121 record. His more than two-decade career with the team includes the glory of 17 AFC East championships, nine Super Bowl appearances, six championship titles, and three Coach of the Year awards.
