Lautaro Martinez showcases strong mentality amid poor goal scoring record in Argentina colors

Currently, there are only a handful of strikers as prolific as Lautaro Martinez. The Argentine is one of the best in his position for the last few years, and even this season has really impressed for Inter Milan. He scores a lot of goals and has a very strong leadership as well.

But it seems that criticism will follow any player, no matter how good they are. Martinez has been great in his club career so far, but hasn’t taken the same form in his international career. And now he has decided to speak about it himself.

Lautaro Martinez claps back at critics

Lautaro Martinez has not had the greatest of times with the Argentina national team. While he was part of their Copa America and World Cup success, he played little part in it. He had no goals to show for in their World Cup victory and missed many chances in the final against France. Later on, he still did not manage to impress for the national team, with the latest case being yesterday.

In the 3-0 victory against El Salvador in a friendly game, he failed to score once again. All of this has earned him much criticism from the fans and media. But he has now decided to hit back at them.

In an interview, he said that he cares little for the critics, “I try to show it on the field. After that, let people speak, let the fans speak… I care little about that. I like to compete, sometimes the goal is not given, today I tried it but I couldn’t.”

He then showed his elite mentality by saying he will never give up. “I will continue working and let’s hope in the next game I will have an opportunity to score. I want to show those people who talk so much that it’s not like that, that they’re wrong, because I always give my best.”

Lautaro Martinez’s goal scoring record for Argentina

Lautaro Martinez was quite prolific with Argentina before his decline in form for them. In the 55 games he has played, he has scored 21 goals and provided 8 assists. 8 of them came in friendly games, while 7 in the World Cup qualification games. The rest are 6 in competitive games, 5 in the Copa America, and 1 in the Finalissima against Italy.

Martinez has last find the back of the net for his country in 2022. It was on 24th September that he last scored a goal against Honduras in a friendly game before the World Cup. He has not managed to score once since then, which has earned him a lot of criticism. On the other hand, he has scored 23 goals in Serie A for his club, and is the top scorer as well.

Lautaro Martinez will have the chance to break his goal scoring drought when Argentina faces Costa Rica in a friendly on March 27th.
