NBA great Shaquille O’Neal once fanboyed Lionel Messi: “I would like to tell you that I love you”

NBA icon Shaquille O’Neal once expressed his admiration for soccer legend Lionel Messi, who transitioned from the French soccer league Ligue 1 to the MLS. The statement by Shaq occurred during this period of transition.

Soccer and basketball, being two of the most popular sports globally, witness players from both sports appreciating each other’s greatness. Shaq’s acknowledgment of Messi’s talent was not unique, as Lakers star LeBron James also had kind words for the soccer legend.

Shaquille O’Neal’s heartfelt message for Messi before Miami move

NBA icon Shaquille O’Neal had a heartfelt message for the Inter Miami star Lionel Messi before he moved to the MLS. Shaq’s statements were conveyed by Albiceleste Talk on X (formerly Twitter).

Shaq reportedly said, “I would like to tell you that I love you, my brother. You are the best, and it will be a pleasure to get to know you.”

Shaq told Messi that he loved him and declared the soccer star as the best. He also showed his desire to want to know the 2022 World Cup champion which was very heartwarming for many fans.

Messi transferred to Inter Miami in the MLS from the French team Paris Saint-German. Shaq’s history with the city of Miami might have been another reason for the NBA icon welcoming the soccer star to Miami.

Shaq and LeBron James both regard Messi as ‘The Best’

Shaquille O’Neal wasn’t the only NBA player to call Lionel Messi “the Best.” LeBron James, who is arguably the GOAT in the world of basketball, also called Messi the best aligning himself with Shaq.

LeBron went to witness the MLS debut of La Pulga at DNV x PNK stadium last year. Bron and Messi had brief interactions and were seen exchanging a few words. The Lakers star captured the moment and posted it on X. He accompanied the post with a heartfelt message applauding the soccer legend.

“Seeing the GOAT of soccer, Lionel Messi graces the MLS with his great presence. It is a game-changer for us. His arrival not only elevates the league but also inspires an entirely new generation of soccer fans in our country,” said LeBron.

‘The L-Train’ declared Lionel Messi as the GOAT of soccer, expressing his stance in the ongoing Messi vs Ronaldo debate. He commended the former PSG star’s decision to join the MLS, noting that it would elevate the league and inspire more soccer fans.
