Former Steelers RB warns NFL teams on Drake Maye amid Giants rumors: “He’s going to get you fired”

After making a significant impact at UNC for two years, Drake Maye is poised to enter the NFL draft. He already has drawn comparisons to other top prospects like Caleb Williams and J.J. McCarthy due to his impeccable size and super athleticism.

Meanwhile, as speculation abounds regarding the New York Giants’ interest in Maye, excitement is growing for the possibility of his selection. However, NFL teams should take heed of former NFL fullback Merril Hoge’s warning when considering the UNC star as their franchise quarterback.

Merril Hoge brutally slams Drake Maye

Regarding highly anticipated quarterback prospect Drake Maye, former Pittsburgh Steelers fullback Merril Hoge recently made audacious remarks, implying that Maye’s success may ultimately result in the coaching staff of whatever team chooses him failing.

According to Hoge, Maye’s erratic play and lackluster performance in his last game raised significant concerns about his ability to succeed at the professional level.

“Drake Maye is the kind of player that will get you fired. Especially if you draft him in the top five or top three, he’s going to get you fired. His last game was probably the most embarrassing display I’ve seen from a guy who is supposed to be an elite franchise quarterback. He’s erratic. He’s everywhere.”

Hoge couldn’t help but draw a comparison between Maye and former rookie Malik Willis. Willis, once touted as a top quarterback prospect, ended up being drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the third round. Hoge seemed to have some doubts about the athleticism of the UNC star and hinted that his skill set might not be enough to succeed in the NFL, which could result in an early setback in his career.

Despite Hoge’s critical assessment, it’s worth noting Maye’s impressive collegiate career at UNC, where he earned second-team All-ACC honors during the 2023 season. With impressive statistics, including 3,608 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and nine interceptions, Maye demonstrated considerable talent and potential during his time in college.

Giants interested in drafting Drake Maye

The latest rumors in the NFL draft world has the New York Giants eyeing a potential trade-up to secure quarterback Drake Maye. According to reports, Fox Sports’ Ralph Vacchiano outlined the possibility, suggesting that the Giants could make a bold move to leapfrog other teams in the draft order to secure the No. 3 overall pick and draft Maye.

“One league source said he believes that if Maye somehow gets past the Washington Commanders at No. 2 — which is far from a certainty — the Giants would consider making an aggressive offer to the New England Patriots to move up from No. 6 to No. 3 to draft him,” he said, per Sportskeeda.

Meanwhile, the young star has been linked to several teams, with the Washington Commanders and New England Patriots emerging as the frontrunners. Following a recent connection with former Commanders quarterback Sam Howell, he reportedly met with the Commanders’ coaching staff, indicating serious interest from the franchise.

In addition to the Commanders and Patriots, the Minnesota Vikings have also been mentioned as a potential landing spot for Maye. With uncertainty surrounding their quarterback position after Kirk Cousins left for the Atlanta Falcons, the Vikings could view Maye as their quarterback of the future.
