“Never give up”: how John Cena inspired a fan’s mom battling breast cancer

John Cena, a 16-time WWE World Champion, has not only gained immense respect from the WWE Universe but has also built a significant young fan base. His motivational slogans, “Hustle, Loyalty, Respect” and “Never Give Up,” have inspired countless fans to overcome challenges and pursue their dreams.

Beyond his WWE presence, the 16-time WWE champion brings joy to younger fans through surprise in-person visits. However, in 2021, a notable incident captured Cena in tears as a video surfaced featuring a young WWE fan expressing gratitude for his support.

John Cena’s inspiring effect on a young fan’s life

In 2017, as part of an online campaign with Cricket Wireless, John Cena reacted to messages from WWE fans. One particular message featured a short video from a young fan named Tyler Scheer, who used Cena’s message to support his mom during her cancer treatment.

On the video Tyler said, “John Cena’s message helped my family because I got his wristband that he gave to me, and when my mom was having her six-hour surgery, I gave her the wristband and I told her never give up, and now she’s now cancer-free.”

Tyler said that he was very happy when he got the wristband from Cena at a WWE event, which had the words “never give up” written on it. After days from this event, his mom was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to undergo a six-hour surgery.

Before her surgery, Tyler decided to give Cena’s wristband to his mom, and she wore the wristband during her surgery and throughout her recovery. After this video ended, Cena was left in tears, and he was surprised when Tyler and his mom appeared on the show, having been behind the screens when the video was played. Cena hugged Tyler and said that they were the coolest surprise ever, giving them some WWE merchandise.

Tyler’s mom said, “He made sure that through my cancer journey, he’d say, ‘Mom, Cena says never give up.’ And now I’m cancer-free.” Cena’s gesture was appreciated by many people on social media, who praised him for being a positive influence and a generous person.

Cena surprised 7-year-old cancer patient even during pandemic

John Cena has a long history of supporting charities, such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation, for which he has granted over 650 wishes for children with life-threatening illnesses. He holds the record for the most wishes granted by any individual in the history of Make-A-Wish.

Even during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Cena did not let the social distancing measures stop him from fulfilling a young boy’s dream. On May 3, 2020, Cena paid a visit to meet a 7-year-old boy from Odessa, David Castle, who was diagnosed with stage 4 Wilms tumor last fall.

David was undergoing radiation and chemotherapy treatments, and his one wish was to meet his idol, John Cena, in person. Cena, wearing a mask and gloves, surprised David at his home with a visit and a bunch of gifts.

Cena presented two WWE championship belts, a hat, and armbands to David and spent some quality time with David and his family. This visit was arranged by Pasco County Fire Rescue, who also showed up at David’s home with fire trucks and sirens to celebrate his birthday on May 10, 2020.

David’s mother, Tammy Miller, said that Cena’s visit was a blessing and a joy for her son and also thanked Cena and the Make-A-Wish Foundation for making David’s wish possible. Cena has shown that he cares deeply about his young fans, and that he is willing to do whatever it takes to make their dreams come true.
